Which Chinese Tea Should You Choose Instead of Coffee
Hi! We’re Yara and Denis. We’ve been living in Egypt for several years and know it inside and out. We started promoting Chinese tea culture here and decided to write a series of articles for those who are just beginning to explore this fascinating world.
Introduction
Coffee culture is incredibly rich and diverse. However, coffee isn’t the best fit for everyone. Some people experience anxiety from its sudden burst of energy, others dislike the energy crash that follows, and some find themselves needing larger and larger amounts just to get through the day. Surprisingly, many people gradually start drinking less coffee after discovering Chinese tea. It can also provide energy—but in a different, gentler way.
Can Chinese Tea Replace Coffee
Chinese tea contains caffeine, so it can boost your energy and improve focus. In addition to caffeine, it also contains other natural compounds, such as L-theanine. Thanks to the combination of caffeine and L-theanine, many people describe the energy from Chinese tea as smoother, calmer, and more balanced.
Chinese tea often provides a gentler and longer-lasting boost of energy, with a more gradual and natural decline afterward. While this is a subjective experience, many of our customers describe it in exactly this way.

Another thing we personally love is that Chinese tea can be enjoyed throughout the day. We often take a one-liter thermos of Shu Pu-erh to work, brew it using the simple steeping method, and slowly drink it together throughout the day. Every tea break becomes a small ritual that helps us recharge and refocus.
It’s worth noting, however, that strongly brewed Shu Pu-erh or young Sheng Pu-erh can also produce a powerful energy boost, which may increase feelings of anxiety in some people. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to how Chinese tea affects your own body.

Which Chinese Tea Should You Choose Instead of Coffee
Many people ask which Chinese tea provides the strongest energy boost. In reality, Chinese tea is incredibly diverse—not only in flavor but also in the way it affects your body and mind.
If you’re looking for a tea to replace coffee, Shu Pu-erh is usually the best place to start. It provides a steady energy boost and is very easy to brew without any elaborate tea ceremony. Many athletes, freedivers, kitesurfers, and windsurfers enjoy Shu Pu-erh. It’s a great choice for people who enjoy rich, full-bodied flavors and are used to starting their day with a cup of coffee.
Sheng Pu-erh, on the other hand, has a stronger effect on mental clarity. It helps improve focus and organize your thoughts. We personally enjoy drinking Sheng Pu-erh during long hours of intellectual work, when it’s the mind—not the body—that needs an extra boost.
By the way, in our article “What Is Pu-erh Tea in Simple Terms“, we explain the different types of Pu-erh and what effects you can expect from each of them.
Light oolongs, such as Tie Guan Yin, and green teas like Longjing are also excellent for improving focus and giving your body a gentle boost. We love taking these teas with us on different outdoor activities. They are especially enjoyable during hot Egyptian days—not only do they provide refreshing energy, but they also quench thirst and have a light, fresh taste.
Conclusion
Chinese tea isn’t a complete replacement for coffee, but for many people it becomes a more comfortable alternative. It can also boost your energy, but it does so differently—more gently, more calmly, and more gradually. That’s why many people eventually find themselves choosing tea instead of another cup of coffee.
